Ara Güler, Orhan Pamuk
ID: 17572
Издательство: Thames & Hudson

A portrait in photographs and texts of Istanbul from the 1940s to the 1980s, captured by two greats of contemporary Turkish culture

Ara Güler's Istanbul is a vivid photographic record of daily life in the cultural capital of Turkey from the 1940s to the 1980s. Captured through the unerring lens of the award-winning Ara Güler, the 'Eye of Istanbul', the city's melancholy aesthetic oscillates between tradition and modernity. As the crossroads between Europe and Asia, Istanbul has lived through several empires and has a character that is as many-layered as its history - something that Güler's photographs convey with great sensitivity. These remarkable black-and-white images are accompanied by an evocative foreword by Orhan Pamuk, the first Turkish recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature.

Both writer and photographer were born in Istanbul, and each in his youth held the ambition of becoming a painter. Here, each in his own way paints a brushless picture of his home town and captures, through the image and the word, its very soul.

About the Author:

Nicknamed ‘The Eye of Istanbul’, Ara Güler (1928–2018) chronicled the city with melancholic black-and-white pictures taken mostly with a Leica camera. He received countless awards, and photographed many luminaries, including Winston Churchill, Indira Gandhi, Bertrand Russell, Alfred Hitchcock, Maria Callas, Marc Chagall, Salvador Dalí and Pablo Picasso.

Patrick Keiller
ID: 13980
Издательство: Fuel

London is Patrick Keiller’s highly imaginative psychogeographic journey through (and history of) London, as undertaken by an unnamed narrator and his companion, Robinson. The unseen pair complete a series of excursions around the city in an attempt to investigate what Robinson calls ‘the problem of London’, during which a palimpsest of the city is revealed.

London is a unique take on the essay-film format, with scathing reflections on the recent past, enlivened by offbeat humour and wide-ranging literary anecdotes. A variety of unexpected scenes recover the familiar London of the near past: Concorde almost touches suburban houses as it lands; Union Jacks fly from Wembley Stadium’s Twin Towers and pigeons flock around tourists in Trafalgar Square. Such images, in combination with the script, allow us to see beyond the London typically presented.

It is both a fascinating reflection on the diverse histories of Britain’s capital and an illuminating record of 1992, the year of John Major’s re-election, IRA bombs and the first crack in the House of Windsor.

With an afterword and location notes from the director, the book’s publication is the first time the film has been fully reproduced in print.

Combining an architect’s eye with low-flying, aerial views, Milstein shows London’s charm, beauty, and iconic buildings in wonderful and breathtaking photographs.

The soul of New York. A photographic journey through the history of the world's greatest city

This book presents the epic story of New York on nearly 600 pages of emotional, atmospheric photographs, from the mid-19th century to the present day. Supplementing this treasure trove of images are over a hundred quotations and references from relevant books, movies, shows and songs. The city's fluctuating fortunes are all represented, from the wild nights of the Jazz Age and the hedonistic disco era to the grim days of the Depression and the devastation of 9/11 and its aftermath, as its broken-hearted but unbowed citizens picked up the pieces.

The urban beach of Coney Island and the sleaze of Times Square; the vistas of Central Park and the crowds on 5th Avenue. The streets, the sidewalks, the chaos, the energy, the ethnic diversity, the culture, the fashion, the architecture, the anger and the complexity of the city is all laid out in this beautiful book block and block. Robert Doisneau
ID: 3865
Издательство: Flammarion

As a photographer, Robert Doisneau is known for his ability to infuse images of daily life with poetic nuance that imbued his photojournalism with an enduring popular appeal. The unprecedented scope of this collection provides the opportunity to study his more composed, aesthetically structured images alongside his snapshots, which offer a more anecdotal account of Doisneau's Paris. Organized thematically, the book leads us on an entrancing tour through the gardens of Paris, along the Seine, and through the crowds of Parisians who define their beloved city. More than 600 photographs-many rare, forgotten, and previously unpublished-are assembled in this beautiful volume to create a unique portrait of Paris. From toddlers scrambling to cross rue de Rivoli to fresh-faced accordionists, from elegant dog walkers to exuberant roller skaters, and from the indelible kiss in front of the Hétel de Ville to cyclists beneath the Eiffel Tower, the magic of Paris in black and white is a timeless treasure. The photographs, edited by Doisneau's daughter, are complemented by citations from the photographer himself, which reveal his profound fascination with the city where he lived and worked

During the golden age when Montparnasse was teeming with artists, Robert Doisneau gained remarkable access to the artists working in Paris from 1937 onwards, and he visited their studios and caught them in various private moments: working, reflecting, and even playing with their children. This book, which includes some previously unpublished photographs, shares Doisneau’s intimate view on the work and lives of these artists. Many remain famous - Picasso, David Hockney, Jasper Johns, Giacometti, Saul Steinberg, Marcel Duchamp, Le Corbusier, Foujita - while others have fallen into obscurity, perhaps one day to be rediscovered. Regardless of the artist’s social status - whether major figure of the day or struggling newcomer - Doisneau approached each subject with the same humble eye. His signature black-and-white photographs capture the nostalgia of the period and bear witness to these artists in the act of creating some of the world’s finest art. This book, published in cooperation with Doisneau’s daughters, is a fascinating document of the daily lives of artists by one of the world’s most famous and popular photographers.

Serge Ramelli
ID: 19090
Издательство: teNeues

In a fascinating way, the French photographer and YouTube star shows us the changeable character of New York, this time in colour: obtrusively colourful neon signs, pulsating hustle and bustle on the avenues next to atmospheric sunrises over the awakening city or empty streets without a trace of human life.

People play a rather subordinate role in Serge Ramelli’s photos. What matters is the setting, the mood, the light and the surroundings.

Typical elements and sights are always depicted as no visitor to the city has ever seen them, except in their dreams – or in a movie. Because that is what Ramelli is a master of: elevating everyday scenes to cinematic ones. His photographs show iconic places such as Times Square and the Empire State Building in a new light and invite you to discover the city from a dreamlike perspective.

Serge Ramelli

Издательство: teNeues

An atmospheric photography book capturing Paris's poetic flair, tradition, and modernity.

Paris... so familiar and yet surprising. In pastel shades and dazzling details like the palette of French Impressionism, Serge Ramelli presents a unique and personal photo homage to the City of Lights. With romance and history in her blood, Paris shows her tender side as never seen before.

Only Paris offers the inimitable stage that can turn every photo into a film still. In its architectural splendor, its wealth of churches, palaces, parks, and grand boulevards, the city is peerless in its beauty and allure. Add to that a long, rich, and influential history, and this coveted capital is art in its purest form.

From the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre, to Montmartre and Saint-Germain-des-Pres, the traces of painters and photographers and echoes of actors and movie directors can be found all over the city. In this exquisite Paris photo book, Serge Ramelli pays tribute to this unique legacy of art and culture, capturing the city's poetic flair. As in vintage postcards, with glowing street lights or only certain details in color in a black and white panorama, Ramelli accentuates particular picture elements to create a modern, 3D effect, while retaining a close connection to Parisian history.

Vivid in one's memory or perhaps imagination, Ramelli collects rapturous moments with his camera — a brilliant firework display in front of the Eiffel Tower or the sight of the Pont Neuf amidst freshly fallen snow. In the beguiling blue hour, or a nuit (the magical light at sunrise and sunset), the photographer shows a kaleidoscope along the Seine that will delight all who have lived and loved in Paris.

This beautiful photography book by Serge Ramelli presents Paris in a unique lighting mood that transforms photos into vivid film stills.

Paris, so familiar, but different. A city with romance and history in its blood shows its tender side in a special way here. In pastel tones and luminous nuances that could have come from the palette of French Impressionists, Frenchman Serge Ramelli paints a very personal, photographic overall colouring.

The Eiffel Tower and the Louvre, Montmartre and Saint-Germain-des-Prés, traces of the artists who once lived here can be seen everywhere, actors made their homes here after film productions, art and culture are everywhere in exuberant abundance. A flair that Ramelli skilfully captures. Ramelli collects all of these very special moments with his camera. A kaleidoscope of the Seine metropolis that will delight every lover: in the magical light at sunrise and sunset, at the blue hour or ‘à nuit’.
